A Family that’s All in for Youth

The Bodnarek family donates to United Way because they believe all children deserve the opportunity to get an education.

As a family, we've always had the philosophy to give back to our community, and we’ve tried to get our adult children involved in that process so that they understand why it’s important.

We believe we have an active responsibility to give back, and we choose to keep it in the community because this is where we live and where we’ve been blessed with so much ourselves – where we’ve been given so many opportunities.

We believe the one thing that makes a difference in anyone's life is the opportunity to get an education.

If you don't have the basics at home or in your family, it's pretty tough to get through those first initial steps in life. If you're hungry or if you've got any safety concerns, or if things are going on at home that you can't control, it's pretty tough to be excited about learning.

That’s why All in for Youth resonated with us and our family. United Way is asking, "How can we set kids up to be successful?"

They are making sure kids have what they need so they are able to learn in school. Kids aren't going to learn if they show up with an empty stomach, or if they show up with trauma. Understanding what All in for Youth offers makes us so excited about the program.

United Way has something for everyone. If you want your money to go to a specific area then that can happen, and if you don't care then that's fine too. They make it easy for anyone to give, and you can find a focus that fits your family’s giving profile.

Nobody gets to where they are on their own. You’re connected to everyone you meet, everyone you experience, and everyone who's had an influence on you. It's a responsibility you have to give back to those who have helped you.

I have been so privileged and have had so many champions in my life - it’s important to me to be that champion for other people. As a community, when everyone feels like they have a champion and the resources to be the best they can be, we all benefit.

The supports were there when we needed them and this is our opportunity to give back.

As a family, we’ve always had the philosophy to give back to our community. We grew up with the understanding that if you were blessed with anything a little bit more than your neighbour, you should give some of it back.

Everyone deserves a fair chance at being able to succeed and have a meaningful life. When money, resources, and caring people all arrive at the same place – magical things happen.

Nobody wants to see struggle – It’s never easy to see someone on the street or a child experiencing poverty.

The organizations that United Way supports gave me the opportunity to stand on my own two feet.

United Way is not just about fundraising. It is really about transforming our region so that we see success for everyone - children, teens, adults, seniors and new immigrants looking to create a better life for their children.

I learned through United Way that about one in 10 people in the Alberta Capital Region lives in poverty. If I can help level the playing field, I’m definitely going to do what is within my means.
